Family Violence & Violence Intervention

As part of the National Violence Intervention Programme (VIP) across all Hospitals -  Hauora Tairawhiti staff are aware that Family Harm/Family Violence can have a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of EVERYONE in the Whanau.

We also know that Family Harm/Family Violence isn’t always physical;

It can be name-calling, put-downs, isolating someone from their friends and whanau, making them feel bad about themselves, making all the decisions, not giving them money to buy necessary household items, controlling what they wear and who they see, threatening physical harm, taking the children, harming themselves or someone their partner cares about.

It may make someone feel that they are always treading on eggshells, feel anxious and/or helpless, have sore stomachs, headaches, and feeling constantly fearful (among other things)...

For this reason, it’s important that the community knows that our staff will Stand Up, Speak Out and Act if we come across someone accessing our services that we are concerned or worried about,
or who tells us they are worried for themselves or someone else.

Using our WAKA Values - We want to ensure that the community know that Hauora Tairawhiti Staff are able to listen to your concerns or worries – if someone is hurting you or making you feel afraid if you know of someone being hurt, or you are concerned about your own behaviour towards someone you care about.

We will be compassionate and non-judgmental, we want to make sure that you feel safe to leave the hospital and that you are able to be provided with information and resources, and be connected to community services that can help you.

We also share information if we see or hear something we are concerned about
