Auditors from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons were at Gisborne Hospital recently to verify our trauma service. Gisborne Hospital is part of the Midlands Region Trauma Service. The five Midland DHBs are all having their trauma service audited to help analyse systems of care.
The process looks at all phases of acute care from pre-hospital through to discharge and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the hospital's trauma service. Trauma verification allows hospitals to benchmark their services against international standards.
Feedback on the day from the auditors was extremely positive. After reviewing case notes, trauma charts and systems the verification team were impressed with our management of trauma cases. They also ran a dummy trauma call and were pleased with the trauma team’s response.
The team’s feedback honed in on the team work they saw in documentation and experienced as they spoke with all the clinicians involved in care from St John through ED, the wards and the rehabilitation team. The team spoke of levels of service delivery far above their expectations for a service in a comparatively smaller, more rural hospital than in their experience across Australia and New Zealand.
Well done to the trauma team with all the people that play a part in the care. You really put Hauora Tairāwhiti on the map.
