Te Pae Tata

Te Pae Tata | interim New Zealand Health Plan sets out the first two years of action for Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand and Te Aka Whai Ora – Māori Heath Authority as we transform healthcare in Aotearoa.

Te Pae Tata means the start of a journey, and we are re-setting the foundations of our health system to unify health service delivery and deliver joined-up quality care for generations to come.

Te Pae Tata outlines what we will do differetly in these two years to build the foundations of a sustainable, unified health system that better serves our communities – better supporting and growing the healthcare workforce, addressing the current inequities, and improving health outcomes for everyone.

The transformation of the health system embeds Te Tiriti and recognises the collective role of the health system and sector to deliver equitable health outcomes for all New Zealanders. As an interim plan, Te Pae Tata provides a defined focus for the next two years, focusing on Māori, Pacific and Tāngata whaikaha | disabled people.

While Te Pae Tata is being implemented, Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora will begin development of the first full New Zealand Health Plan, to be completed by June 2024, which will be comprehensive and widely consulted with communities.

Te Pae Tata outlines where whānau and communities will see early benefits during the first two years of transformation, and how we will build the platform for future success while continuing to safely provide existing health services.

The interim plan will ensure the health system can continue to provide care to New Zealanders, while we start to implement improvements in the way services are delivered.

The core foundations of our health system remain firmly in place. Hospitals, GPs and pharmacies will continue to provide care to New Zealanders. The interim plan helps us focus our efforts on particular areas, with people and whanau at the centre of everything we do.
