Students in Gisborne Hospital after bus accident

Update 9am Monday 28 July

The 14-year old student who remained in hospital overnight has broken bones. She will be discharged today. A 13-year old student in the same party was admitted to Gisborne Hospital last night for observation. 

Update 9.30pm

Fourteen of the fifteeen people who were admitted to Gisborne Hospital after a bus crash near Morere at 3.30pm this afternoon have now been discharged. Twelve students from Turakina Maori Girls College and three adults, including the bus driver, were admitted with cuts and bruises. The student who will remain in hospital overnight has broken bones.

Breaking news 6pm

Twelve female students and three support people have been taken to Gisborne Hospital after a bus accident on State Highway 2 near Morere Springs, south of Gisborne. The students and support people, from Turakina Maori Girls College near Marton, are all in a comfortable condition. Most are suffering from cuts and bruises, some with suspected broken bones. The accident occurred at 3.30pm today (Sunday 27 July 2014).

The students were on their way to Gisborne to compete in the National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition which starts on Monday (28 July 2014).

Members of the travelling party who were not injured are staying at Waikanae Motor Camp.
