There are 13 new cases of COVID-19 in Tairāwhiti. There are now positive cases outside of our established clusters. The pattern shows the virus is spreading.
In total, there are now 82 active cases in isolation and 24 people have recovered. One of these cases is in still in hospital.
Test results received so far indicate there hasn’t been any transmission form school contacts at GGHS, Awapuni Primary or Campion College, where students have tested positive.
As demand for testing continues to rise, Hauora Tairāwhiti CE Jim Green is calling on the community to only get tested if they have flu-like symptoms, are a close contact of a positive case or have been asked by public health to get tested.
“We’re still seeing large numbers of people getting tested who don’t have symptoms and aren’t close contacts. This is increasing waiting times and adding to people’s frustration,” he said.
“The most common early symptoms of the Omicron variant are a sore or scratchy throat, fatigue and a runny nose. Please get tested if you have these symptoms.
“To speed up the testing process, we’re also asking people to bring their NHI number. This can be found on a recent prescription, medicine or medical letter. Your GP or pharmacy can also provide this number.
The community can also get tested at their GP and at Te Puia Hospital by calling in advance.
