Measles case confirmed in Tairawhiti

MEDIA RELEASE

A primary school boy has returned from the Waikato with measles. “This young chap unfortunately was not immunised and must have come into contact with someone with measles”, said Dr Bruce Duncan, Medical Officer of Health.

“Fortunately, his father took him to his GP and the GP recognised measles and everyone took appropriate action. Tests completed on Friday confirm that he has measles. “

“Anyone who has been in contact who is not immune has been isolated, and we are hoping that we are able to prevent a wider outbreak in the district.”

It is a reminder to ensure that your children are immunised. Measles is a serious disease and is also very infectious. It can be prevented by immunisation.

If you are worried that your child has an infectious disease like measles, please contact your practice before bringing them into the practice to avoid infecting people in the waiting room.
